Stockholm August 2007

The view from town hall in Stockholm is full of boats sailing between the islands. The town is well preserved since it was never bombed in the war; the old town, Gamla Stan, has wonderful architecture and statues. Dinner our first night was at Prinsen's, which has been serving good food since 1897.

Drottningholm palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in the 18thC. It is full of beautiful rooms filled with gorgeous fabrics and those wonderful porcelain stoves.

The highlight of Stockholm for me, the Vasa, is a Swedish warship that sank in the harbor on her maiden voyage in 1628. She was located and salvaged in 1961 and is now housed in a wonderful museum, completely restored. So much was recovered from the muddy harbor- the remnants of her sails were found in the hull as were remains of her sailors. The bronze cannon had been removed earlier. She sank because of inadequate ballast.
