Christmas Markets along the Rhine

December 11, 2008 Vantage Riverboat "Navigator" on the Rhine between Cologne and Nuremberg. Rudesheim, Heidelburg, Rothenberg Ob Tauber, Miltonberg, Wurzburg, and Mainz.

The Christmas Market in Cologne is one of my favorites, perhaps because it is the first one I visited two years ago. Big copper kettles of mushrooms cooking in butter and topped with a sour cream and garlic sauce, potato pancakes so crisp and crunchy with applesauce, wursts of all types, gluwein in steamy fragrant cups or hot chocolate with rum and lots of marzipan!

I never knew pork in so many guises....

Stollen is a big favorite, but I prefer the lebkuchen from Nuremberg- by Schmidt.

The river boats anchor just outside the towns and we usually walk to the markets

Many buildings were reconstructed after WW II, but some are intact.

Life on board is full of fun and great food! Our waitstaff is very creative!
